Yellow Imperial Lapis Tetra 2.5 (Hyphessobrycon cyanotaenia) Med/Large

Yellow Imperial Lapis Tetra 2.5 (Hyphessobrycon cyanotaenia) Med/Large

Hyphessobrycon cyanotaenia, commonly known as the Yellow Imperial Lapis Tetra, belongs to the large family Characidae or Characins. These small characins hail from Brazil.

Origin: Lapis Tetras inhabit areas in rivers where trees grow and in slowly flowing tributaries. These biotopes often have acidic water due to tannins and other substances released from decomposing organic material.

  1. Distinctive Features:
    • A clear cyan mid-lateral line runs from the eye to the middle caudal fin rays.
    • Unlike most of its species, it lacks the elongated spot behind the gills and dark eye pigmentation.
    • Possesses 16-19 branched anal fin rays and 2-4 large teeth.
    • Has a relatively high body and small eyes.
  2. Size: Males reach around 3.3 cm, while females stay smaller at 2.8 cm.
  3. Aquarium Care:
    • Rare in the aquarium trade, Lapis Tetras thrive in soft water with a pH between 4.0 – 5.5 and low GH (<3).
    • Provide hiding places and densely planted environments for optimal coloration.
    • Dark, sandy substrate enhances their vibrant hues.
    • Keep the temperature between 24 – 28°C.
  4. Behavior: Generally calm, but males can display territorial behavior among themselves.
